The End

December 10, 2008 by tgciz

This exercise has made me comfortable with blogging and has increased my knowledge of what is out there. I had heard of most of the 23 Things and had even explored (a little) on my own, but am glad to have had this guided exploration. I hope to keep my knowledge up to date – if not actually using things. I appreciated being able to accomplish this on library time and hope we have  opportunities such as this in the future.

I put off doing this “thing” because I thought I was going to be listening to music or talk, that’s what radio means to me. But, I found a “radio station” website means something different. Yes, I realize that I can listen -not very practical in the Library, but there are plenty of uses for these sites without putting on headphones.  These “stations” are a great way to explore popular music.

I wish I had uninterupted time to work on 23 things and that it will be available to refer to  after this exercise is over.

Wikis are a wonderful tool.  Along with blogs, I can see these methods can be used to communicate between physical locations (Ooops, time for me to move on)

continued at a later time- and staff on different shifts.

All staff could be kept informed and kept up to date.

Of the suggested wikis, the one I liked best was Library Best Practices. Lots of good suggestions in one place.  (Unfortunately the phone rang and I forgot what I was going to say).

Web 2.0 has certainly added to the ability to pass on knowledge and share news, ideas, ways of doing things, etc. People do still come into the library for books and knowledge from books. Not everyone is Internet saavy or wants to be. School assignments often require print sources as well as information from the Internet (which they often find themselves before they come to the library). The sources for information are increasing in number and reference people need to expand their knowledge to best help the customer.

The tools that are available to anyone are amazing. Anyone can produce a video, music or other program and put it on the web. No longer are we limited to getting information from the “media.”  But, the question “Who can we believe?” is more relevant than ever.

What can’t be found on the web?

Recently I had found a video of a song on youtube.  The title was the same as book I was reading.

It seems that one can find anything. It seems thaere is also alot of junk and things I would rather not see, but television is the same way – and like television,  I can just not look at it.

YourMinis start page is no longer functioning. So I clicked on the links that yourminis suggested and learned about widgets and that I can get one that counts down to the election and changes into a map as the votes are being counted. How cool can you get!!

Interesting exploration!

I think I would probably google a question to find an answer, but it is interesting to know such blog sites as Yahoo answers exist. If I want to see what the world is talking about, I could visit this or one of the other sites. Plus, you never know what you could learn.

If I wanted to put my life out for the world to see, these are great tools. I know it can be “private”, but  I can’t believe that anything put on line is really private. I was impressed when I saw a young coworker check her and her husband’s schedule on line before she committed to an on call shift, though I can’t imagine that this would  work in my life.

Delicious is a very handy tool.

To be able to access a list of needed sites wherever you are could be invaluable, who knows this could come in handy as a result of a conversation, in a meeting, etc.
